9-29-21 “Do You Have A Puny Jesus?”

Ted Van Dyken will once again be our guest message bringer this Sunday, August 29th.  The title of his message is “Do You Have A Puny Jesus?” from Hebrews 1:1-4.

Here are Ted’s notes.

First, let’s review what we studied last week.
Hebrews Il says –Hebrew 1:2SAYS
IN THE PAST but IN THESE LAST DAYS
Looking back into history there is finality to it
GOD SPOKE TO OUR PORE FATHERS – TO US-HIS READERS…
(those who are dead) (those living at the time at word
THROUGH PROPHETS – IN A SON
MANY TIMES VARIOUS WAYS
That which God has spoken, the
revealing of who He is and what
He desires has come to a climax –
in one person, in a son,
The apostles & New Testament writers wrote after
Jesus was crucified, buried, rose from
the dead and ascended into heaven,
but their writings have to do with
His life, ministry, words, teaching and
the significance of His coming.
So it is that the writer of Hebrews
states that God has spoken to us in a son.
And who is this Son? What makes
Him Superior to all that has been written
and revealed in the past?

1) The first characteristic is found in
the second half of Hebrew 1:2
it says he is “APPOINTED HEIR OF ALL THINGS”
This means that the Son is the focal
point of the universe. He is the goal
of history, the goal to which all things
progress

.Being an heir implies
Ownership, authority, lordship, and
says He has the right to do what
He wants with what He owns.
To be heir of all things means He
has the right to rule over what has
been given Him.
This is not a new concept to the
Jewish audience. In Psalm 2,  it
says – QUOTE
The writer of Hebrews quotes this
Psalm many times in his letter.

2) Hebrews 1:2 continues with
“THROUGH WHOM HE MADE THE UNIVERSE
The word for “universe” or “worlds”
depending on your translation, literally
means “AGES”. What the writer of
Hebrews is saying is that God, through
the Son, created time … and everything
associated with it.
The Son is the One who brought time
into existence and He controls
all things connected with time.
Time is His creation and it is subject to Him.
That is the reason. He can put time on
hold for a full day for Joshua &
reverse time for Hezekiah.

a Colossians 1:16 states it this way –
3) Hebrews 1:3 now adds to these
two amazing qualities of the son:
“THE SON IS THE RADIANCE OF God’s GLORY”
Glory is a word we use to describe
the majesty of God. If we were to
take all the characteristics, qualities
& attributes of God and place them
into a single container, we would
call that container “The GLORY of God.”
And in reality that container has
a name, it is the Son of God.
The Son is the radiance or outward
manifestation of God-everything
about God is seen in the Son.
In the Old Testament. God would reveal Himself
to man in several ways. Two of the
most familiar are a cloud or a pillar of fire.
We see this mentioned when the people
of Israel were in the desert for 40 years.
It says God protected and provided
for them with a cloud by day and
pillar of fine by night.
The manifestation of the presence of God
was referred to as the ‘Shekinah’ glory.
The Shekinah glory is a visible glory
of God and that is what the Son is…the
brightness of that visible glory.
– John 1:14 tells us, “The Word (Jesus Christ,
the Son of God ) became flesh and made
His dwelling among us (He tabernacled/dwelt
with us). We have seen His glory, the
glory of the One and Only, who came from
the Father, full of grace and truth.”

PLACC
4) the writer of Hebrews goes on to
say this son is the EXACT REPRESENTATION
of God’s BEING”
This means the Son is the perfect
representation of God. Everything
that is true about the Heavenly
Father is the about the Son. The
Son has every attribute of the Father.
The Father iš diety and  the Son is a diety.
in every aspect.

If you want to know what God the Father
is like, you only need to look no further
than the Son- they are exactly alike.

5) The fifth characteristic of the Son
mentioned by the writer of Hebrews
is that the Son SUSTAINS EVERYTHING
By His POWERFUL WORD.
This is amazing. The word used for
Sustain” means to uphold, to carry,
to move toward a goal or destiny
The Son is not only holding things
together, He holds and moves them
toward a particular purpose.
There is an end game & the Son is
moving everything toward that END CAME.
In other words, the Son is governing
all things
He has the power of authority
to be the governor over all things
.
And notice how He directs, sustains,
upholds, governs creation
by His powerful word. By the mere
sound of His voice, creation snaps to
attention and moves according to His
dictate.
Through the declaration of His mind,
the son governs, directs
all of creation, Time, atoms, birds,
animals, plant life are all governed
by the Son of God

Colossians 1:15-17 STATES IT THIS WAY

So far we have seen that God has
spoken to us by His Son whom He
APPOINTED HER OF ALL THINGS,
THROUGH WHOM HE MADE THE UNIVERSE
WHO IS THE RADIANCE OP GOD’S GLORY and
The EXCT REPRESENTATION OP His BEING,
UPHOLDING, SUSTAINING, GOERNING ALL THINGS TO
A FINAL END GAME
But that is not all – we have two more
very important qualities that show how
much better and how much superior
He is than anything we can compare Him with.

Hebrews 1:3 states “AFTER HE HAD
PROVIDED PURPICATION POR SINS,”
This points to the redemptive work
of the son and hints at His priestly
attributes and His position.
This redemptive work was accomplished
by Jesus Christ through His death, burial
and resurrection ®
(A) It should be noted that this
redemptive work was done exclusively
by the Son, it was He and He alone
that provided purification. Angels
didn’t help Him, Creation didn’t help
Him and we certainly didn’t help?
(3) He provided PURIFICATION. What the
Son accomplished through the shedding
of His blood was a cleansing, a washing
away of unrighteousness.
. We are clean, we are pure, we are righteous
because of what He provided..
(c) It is a finished work. Nothing else
needs to be done. He has accomplished
it, finished it, completed it.
this is an inward cleansing – it is
purification for Sin. We are in
need of an inward cleansing, and
nothing we do nothing we attempt
can cleanse us on the inside, can
cleanse us spiritually; Only Jesus can
accomplish that. And for us to
partake of this inner, spiritual
cleansing, all we need to do is
acknowledge the truth about Jesus
Christ, in other words, receive Him
as the Son of God who has provided purification for
sins.
John 1:14 says, “But as many as
received Him to them He gave the
night to become children of God”
Colossians1:19-23 puts it this way.
7). The final attribute the writer of
Hebrews mentions is seen at the
end of Hebrews 1:3 “HE SAT DOWN AT
THE RIGHT HANDS OF Tote MAJESTY IN HEAVEN.”
Tit states He sat down. This means
His work is finished. It’s a done deal.
and it states He sat down at the right hand.
Being at the right hand shows ús
this is an excited position and a
position of power & authority.
Acts 5:31 says “God’ exalted him (Jesus)
to his own right hand as Prince and
Savior that he might give repentance
God forgiveness of sins to Israel.”

 And in 1 Peter 3:216-22 it says…
.
To be at the right hand of the MAJESTY
ON HIGH is timely an exalted and
respected position.
7 attributes or characteristics that
demonstrate the Son of God is
Better, Superior, Greater than any.
. ideology, belief, religion or worldview.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the final
Word. God has revealed Himself in
the Son. This does not negate what
was revealed in the OT, but shows
us that the OT pointed to the Son
and gives us understanding concerning
the Son of God.
These 7 characteristics are a foundation
to understanding the superior nature
of Jesus name.
He is worthy of honor
of praise
of worship
of allegiance
of service
of obedience.
A Philippians 2:9-11 tells us
For us who know Him there is no
better time to give honor & confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, giving glory.
to God the Father.
