· GOD SPOKE …WHAT DO WE HEAR? ?
The letter to the Hebrews begins with
the statement that God spoke to the
Jewish nation, to the Israelites in
the past using the prophets to speak
forth His word. But now God speaks
though His Son.
We are going to break our study into
two parts. this morning we will
talk about the fact that God has
spoken, He has communicated with
us and discover a little on how He
did this. And then, next week, we
will explore several aspects of the
Son of God as found in Hebrew 1:1-4
Now the writer of Hebrews mentions
that God spoke “in the past.”
What is interesting, is that the writer of
Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 11:3
that when God spoke, or in this
instance. God commanded, the universe
was formed. The word used in Hebrews l
is a different word than in Hebrews (1.
when God commanded the universe
into existence, He demonstrated his
might and power. When He spoke
as seen in Hebrews lil, we understand
He is seeking to reveal more than
just His power and might.
His true that God demonstrates His
glory, mighty majesty through creation
You we head inPsalm 19:1-4
And the well known verse in Romans l:20
Recently I discovered Jer. 10:12-13
This is repeated in Jeremiah. 50:15-16
This says that the commands God
gave when He created the universe,
the words that He spoke when
creating something out of nothing
are words of power and AUTHORITY,
of wisdom and UNDERSTANDING.
These were not random thoughts but
words with purpose & design,
Even though God spoke words of
power, wisdom of understanding when
giving the commands of creation, the
writer of Hebrews wants to make a
distinction in Hebrews that when
God spoke in the past to the forefathers,
He spoke with the intent to reveal
perspective, His ideas of what is
good & bad, to reveal TRUTH.
• The way this word “spoke ” is used
leaves no doubt in the readers mind
that it is God who is doing the speaking,
that it is His Words that and being uttered
and not man’s words.
There is a philosophy, teaching, way of
thinking being propagated today
I love the story of the unnamed
Prophet as recorded in 1 Kings 13
It shows that the Word of God, as given
to the prophets in the past, was clear and needed to be obeyed –
STORY
Notice that the man of God, who had
Spoken the Word of God, demonstrated
the power of God when restoring Jeroboam’s
hand, was the one punished, not the prophet who deceived the unnamed
prophet. It was because the unnamed
Prophet had declared prophetic truth
that needed to be heeded. Because
he disobeyed he was punished, and that
punishment authenticated what God had
‘said through him,
I Kings 13:26, 1 Kings 13:31-32 tells us that the old
prophet realizes this fact.
The people who heard or who read
Hebrew’s would relate to what the
writer of Hebrews was saying “God, spoke,
in the past to our forefathers,
through the prophets. Now the writer
of Hebrews states “AT MANY TIMES and
IN VARIOUS WAYS”
Can you think of the various ways
God revealed Himself, his thoughts
and intents in the Old Testament?
VISIONS
DREAMS
WONDERS
FIRE
DIRECT SPEECH
The idea of many times and various
ways”, is like a mosaic. A mosaic
is made of many small pieces, different
shapes
, different colors ‘But as each
piece is put together in its proper
order, it creates a picture, an image
of some thing. Like This
And what is the mosaic, the picture
God was seeking to reveal when
He spoke in the past at rang
times and in various ways?
Jesus And that is exactly what the
writer of Hebrews does when
the move from this thought to
the next with the word “But”
His sad that large doors, swing
on small hinges. The word “but
is one of those hinges.
But… we will have to continue our
study next week.
Let me review and emphasize a few
points we have discovered this morning.
1) God reveals, we discover
God reveals,’ man repeats –
man is not the source of truth
found in the Bible – he is the agent
through whom God’ revealed it is
truth.
2) God has not revealed everything about
Himself or His plans. He has revealed
enough for us to trust & obey
Deuteronomy 29:29
3) God has spoken- What do we hear?
blah blah,?
Do we hear the word as spoken
through the prophet Jeremiah 9:23-24And once we hear what, God has spoken,
it should change our thinking and
change our lives, we need to hear
clearly and then put the pedal to the
medal, and let her roar!’73 Live
life the way God intends, the way our
Creator God designed a desires it.
That is the reason I am glad you are
here, for together we are learning
what God desires of us and together
we can encourage & strengthen each
other to do what the Word of God
says.
