Our Story/Journey

West Shore Community Church’s Beginnings

In 1910, there were two churches in ‘downtown’ Big Arm, Montana.  They were located on the same street that the Post Office now occupies.  Twenty years later, the churches had closed their doors because of the decline of the population.

Fast forward to October 2012 when I (Lee Engbretson) asked God for a “yes or no” answer to a spiritual question one evening.  Within a matter of a few seconds, I heard a voice (in my mind) that said, “I want you to start a church.”  I was taken aback by what I heard.  Yet, I knew that it was the answer to my question.  I proceeded to give a variety of reasons that I really was not the one cut out to start a church.  For example, since it had just snowed the day before (remember this was October in Montana), I said, “Who will plow out the parking area when it snows?”  The answer that I received was, “Don’t worry about it. Someone else can do that.”  (By the way, that is exactly what happened these past ten winters.)

The next morning, I related what had taken place to my wife, Sonya.  She said, “well then, let’s do it.”  Being summer residents for the past eight years, we had discussed the need for a church on the west shore of Flathead Lake stretching from the north side of Polson to the south side of Dayton.  This idea would come and go and was fading until the experience that I just related.

Again, fast forward to January 2013.  We decided to sell our home in Tucson, Arizona after having lived there for fifty-plus years and become full-timers here.  After all, we believe that you can not start a church and be ‘part-timers.’

Our major goals are to “bring people together with Jesus and each other” and “build disciples who bring Jesus to our world.”

“The Rest of the Story”

West Shore became part of the Easthaven Baptist Church family (Easthaven is located in Kalispell) with Frank Shelt along with his wife Karen, co-pastoring with Lee and Sonya Engbretson. Our first service was held August 11, 2013. They sponsored us for eight plus years. Frank was our co-pastor until 2016.

Over the past ten years, we have faced some challenges. Our attendance dwindled to the single digits for a short period of time (although, it seemed longer than it really was). We also had to navigate through the Covid-19 epidemic as we were not able to physically meet for a period of time. Despite the challenges, God was and continues to be faithful. Yes, there will be more challenges ahead, but with God being for us, who can stand against us!

West Shore called Ted Van Dyken to be our new pastor along with his wife, Jean on August 29, 2021. On November 14, 2021, the baton was passed to Ted as he officially became our pastor.  We are now part of the Rocky Mountain Bible Mission Association.

“May God richly bless Ted and Jean’s ministry.” Lee and Sonya Engbretson
