9-13-20 “Unity in the Servanthood of Jesus: Part 2”

“And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him” (Acts 28:30-31).

Message Title: “Unity in the Servanthood of Jesus: Part 2”.

Book: Philippians
Chapter: 2
Verses: 6-11

Key Verse:
“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” (Philippians 2:7, NIV).

Key Words: incarnation, crucifixion, exaltation, adoration, confession.

Reference Verses:
“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9, NIV).

“For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15,
NIV).

Observations: Paul cites Jesus as the supreme example of “all in” servanthood. Paul describes the incarnation of Jesus.

Interpretations: Jesus came to earth as our “Undercover Boss” revealing himself to be crucified. Jesus did not give up His divine qualities to become man, but rather, added the incarnation in man to his deity and temporarily withheld some of his divine qualities in submission to the will of the Father as a humble servant.

Applications: (The “So What?)

1. Only an infinite God can forgive an infinite amount of sins (past-present-future).
Jesus must be and is 100% man and 100% God. Only faith in the gospel provided by Jesus do we have salvation.
2. Following the example of Jesus as the ultimate servant provides us a supreme mentor of how to love God and love others.
