8-9-20 “Making Jesus the Center of Our Lives”

“Making Jesus the Center of Our Lives”

This is week 2 of our 9-week series “Living under the Lordship of Jesus.”

Introduction

Last week, we were introduced to the reasons that Jesus has the authority to be called Lord. Remember that God the Father bestowed the office of Lord to Jesus Christ His Son because Jesus had surrendered

Himself in full obedience and had accomplished the work of salvation through crucifixion and victory over all enemies through His resurrection. This week, we will dive into the question of how to make Jesus the center of our lives.

What is the center of your life? Money, car, job/career, children, spouse, fame, house, boat, golf, food, looks, relationships…………………… Did you ever tell someone that you “loved them with all your heart?” …………..Where does Jesus fit in your life today?

Message

Read Matthew 22:37-39

37 “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Read John 15:17

This is my command: Love each other.”

When we stop and think about it, not if, but when we follow those two commands, are we not making Jesus the center of our lives…..

It seems pretty simple to follow these commands. But most of us know that it is far from simple. Perhaps the answer lies in the following verses.

Read John 14:15-17

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.”

In order to keep these two commands, we must rely on the power provided by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Relying requires a conscious effort on our part to ask the Holy Spirit to help us.

Concluding Remarks and Application

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a magic formula of do’s and do not’s whereby we can make Jesus the center of our lives? That would put the focus on us though and that is not what Jesus wants. Following the first great command puts the focus where it belongs – on Him alone!

To sum it up, we cannot make Jesus the center of our life by our own strength or power, but by the power available to us by the indwelling Holy Spirit. If you have not already done so, now is the time to get off the throne and put Jesus on it.
