4-19-20 “An Unforgettable Walk” Luke 24:13-35
This is going to be more like a blog than a sermon. Most of us are familiar with the account in Luke 24 where two of the disciples of Jesus had an encounter with Him on the road to Emmaus soon after His Resurrection. One of the disciple’s names was Cleopas (his name is mentioned in John 19:25 as the wife of Cleopas who stood at the cross of Jesus).
It is interesting that when Jesus joined them as they were walking that they were arguing. What were they arguing about? Jesus asked them in verse 17 “What is this dispute that you are having with each other as you are walking?” Perhaps, the rest of verse 17 provides us with a possible partial answer. “And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.” The story then continued with the disciples (remember they did not recognize Him) asking Jesus why He did not know about the news of the crucifixion and the events leading up to it.
This story should cause us to pause for a moment to remember our own unforgettable “Road to Emmaus.” When was it that our “eyes” were open to the truth of who Jesus really is and what brought us to that point? Remember that it took an unfolding of the Old Testament by Jesus for the disciples to begin to understand who Jesus really was. Verse 27 “Then beginning with Moses and All the prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.” The point is that they didn’t immediately “get it.” And isn’t that true for many of us? Furthermore, we should be encouraged that others near and dear to us who have not had that “Road to Emmanus” experience still have an opportunity to have their “eyes opened.”
So, let us continue to pray for those who are having an argument with themselves whether Jesus is the “real deal” that they will have a “Road to Emmaus” experience!
